What lies beneath: how to choose your wedding lingerie

What you wear under your wedding dress is almost as important to get right as the dress itself. Sounds odd, yes, but definitely true. The right underwear on your wedding day, as with any other day, can take an outfit from pretty good to totally awesome in one hoik of a bra strap.
But first, a stern warning, just in case you’ve been wandering through Agent Provocateur or Myla and imagining the lacy, barely-there bits of froth that will adorn your body on the big day. Step away from the frills! What you need under your wedding dress are sculpting, smoothing, sucking-in genius pants and bras that will maintain you in a goddess-like bearing even when you’ve done the Macarena four times and are on your fifth mimosa. The lacy bits can be saved for the wedding night or the honeymoon!

So, where to begin? Firstly, buy the dress before the lingerie. Some dresses are clingier than others; you might end up with strapless when you weren’t planning on it; and sometimes a push-up bra just isn’t the right thing. Once you’ve picked the dress, take some advice from the designer or the store that it’s from. The chances are they will have helped lots of brides in similar situations and will know what works and what doesn’t. It will help if you can take your underwear to any fittings that you might be having from now on, so now is the time to start your hunt.
Big department stores that stock a range of body shaping underwear are the best place to start, especially if you can get hold of a helpful underwear fitter (book an appointment in advance at M&S and John Lewis). Everyone’s body has different issues, so what looks great on paper really needs to be tried out in real life. As far as bras go, a commonly repeated statistic tells us 90% of British woman are wearing the wrong bra size. Really? Can we all be so wrong? The underwear company Curvy Kate thinks so. Rather brilliantly you can upload a picture of yourself wearing your bra and they will tell you what size you should be wearing, and even suggest brands that may suit you.

Generally women need to go down a back size and up TWO cup sizes to feel properly supported and comfortable, they say. Sounds crazy but definitely worth looking into.
Also, if you are planning to loose weight before the wedding do factor in the possibility that you may need to be remeasured closer to the big day.

If your gown has a v-neck or other daring neckline you will definitely need some of the celebrity favourite ‘tit tape’ to keep you firmly in place – try Hollywood Fashion Tape for a good hold.

If you are considering an all-in-one body shaper under your wedding gown do try on as many as possible and once you’ve chosen, try wearing it all day to make sure it doesn’t crush vital organs or cut off blood supply. Today’s body enhancers are not quite as bad as boned corsets once were but a poor fit can still be a very uncomfortable thing. Make sure you can bend down, sit and dance in it while feeling supported. Also – and this goes for all your underwear – it should be skin-coloured, not white. Particularly with flash photography, white underwear can often show through a dress. Marks & Spencer has some nice affordable options including this firm control Magicwear body that would work
well under a body-skimming dress
